PLC e-Portfolio Part 6: Managing a Diverse Team

I chose to write about Sofía Margarita Vergara because she comes from my country of origin, Colombia, and like me, she belongs to a minority: Latino immigrants. This video was published in 2019 and in a way tells of the situations that Sofia went through before and after going to the United States. For those who don't know her, she is an actress, born in the city of Barranquilla on July 10, 1972, and immigrated to the United States in the 1990s. In this country, her career flourished rapidly, until she was recognized as one of the best comedy actresses on American television.

In the video, Sofía talks about the difficulties of being Latino in a country like the United States and how the language was a barrier for her, as well as for many of us who emigrated with little or no knowledge of the new language. It's no secret that ethnic minorities, especially Latinos, face common challenges faced by minorities in the entertainment industry.

More often than not, Latinos face, like Sofía, cultural and language barriers. She has become a Latino reference in the United States mainly because of her strong accent, a situation that she knew how to put in her favor. On the other hand, cultural stereotypes also limit opportunities for Latino actors, who often play characters that reinforce certain ethnic stereotypes.

Despite the aforementioned initial challenges, Sofia has shown a strong will to overcome obstacles and persevere in a difficult industry, in an even more complex country. Thanks to her dedication and determination, she overcame barriers and reached a level that many people who gave up along the way could not reach.

Sofia has been recognized as a talented actress and has been nominated for many awards. Her featured appearance on the hit television series "Modern Family" put her in the spotlight of the media, challenging popular stereotypes associated with characters of Latino descent. Additionally, she has used her success to advocate for representation and inclusion in the entertainment industry, becoming a role model for many Latinos.

As I said before, Sofía is clearly a success story thanks to her determination, however, I detail some strategies to help people in similar situations and work environments.

1. Promote Diversity and Inclusion: It is important to create an inclusive work environment that offers equal opportunities to people of Latino descent. This means having diversity in production teams and avoiding stereotypes in assigned roles.
2. Avoid stereotypes and restrictive roles: Latino actors should have the opportunity to play a variety of characters instead of being limited to stereotypes. Showing your versatility and talent helps break existing stereotypes.
3. Provide leadership opportunities: It is beneficial to provide Latino actors with leadership opportunities, such as directing or producing projects. This increases their visibility and allows them to contribute at all levels of the industry.
4. Support Mentoring Programs: Mentoring programs connect emerging Latino actors with experienced professionals who can guide them and help them overcome the challenges they face on the job.
5. Create networks and support spaces: it is important to promote the creation of networks and spaces where Latino actors can connect, share experiences and support each other. This strengthens the Latin American community in the industry by creating opportunities.
6. Education: Promoting understanding and knowledge of the Latino culture in the industry helps break down barriers and prejudices. This creates a more inclusive environment.
