OB - Research Blog Assignment N°4 - The Gig Economy - "The State of Gig Work in 2021"

According to the article "The State of Gig Work in 2021", the gig economy has become increasingly popular in recent years as more people look for ways to make money on their own. According to a Pew Research Center study, in 2021, 10% of American workers participated in the gig economy, an increase of 3% since 2015.

The article mentions, a number of reasons why people choose to work in the gig economy, some do it because they want more flexibility and control over their time, others because they want to earn more money and finally others because they simply enjoy the freedom to work independently.

The article also details some advantages and disadvantages of the gig economy. For one thing, it can give people more flexibility and control over their time. It can also be a good way to earn more money. However, the gig economy can also be unstable and insecure. People who work in the gig economy may have a hard time finding work, and may not have the same benefits as traditional workers.

In general, the gig economy is a viable option for some people, but it is not the right one for everyone. People considering working in the gig economy should carefully weigh the pros and cons before making a decision.

Here are some additional facts from the Pew Research Center study:

  • The gig economy is most common among millennials and Gen Z.
  • People who work in the gig economy are more likely to be low-income than traditional workers.
  • People who work in the gig economy are more likely to be without health insurance than traditional workers.
  • People who work in the gig economy are more likely to be dissatisfied with their jobs than traditional workers.

The Pew Research Center study suggests that the gig economy is a trend that is likely to continue to grow in the coming years. However, it is important to remember that this is not a magic solution to all employment problems, it is a viable option for some people, but it is not the right one for everyone.

This article is relevant to me as it provides information on trends in the gig economy in North America. In addition to explaining in detail that the gig economy has been growing rapidly since 2015, it provides information on the challenges and opportunities of the gig economy. Some of the challenges include a lack of job security, a lack of benefits, and a lack of stability. However, the gig economy also offers opportunities for flexibility, control and higher income.

As an architect I could use my skills and experience to work on a variety of projects, both within and outside of the real estate sector and I could have more flexibility and control over my work, allowing me to balance my work life with my family life.

  1. Thank you Gustavo, I truly enjoyed reading your blog regarding the gig economy. I felt somewhat identified with your description of it, in both its pros and cons. Being an independent online contractor myself, attending to three or four main clients as my main source of income I find it enjoyable and compatible with my current academic obligations. Yet, after graduating I would like to keep doing the same kind of gig economy arrangement, despite the challenges it presents, such as not enabling the worker to have paid vacation or an employer-sponsored insurance policy, yet I think the benefits outweigh the downsides. Thanks again Gus!
