OB - Research Blog Assignment N°3 - The Gig Economy - "Thriving in the Gig Economy"

The article, "Thriving in the Gig Economy," published by the Harvard Business Review, describes the gig economy as a term used to describe the growing trend of people working on freelance or short-term contracts instead of traditional full-time jobs. This trend is being driven by a number of factors, including the growing popularity of online platforms that connect freelancers with clients, the rise of automation, and the shift from the manufacturing economy to the knowledge economy.

According to the article, there are several advantages and disadvantages associated with the gig economy. For one, it can offer workers more flexibility and freedom than traditional jobs. Workers can choose their own projects, their own hours, and their own workplaces. This can appeal to people looking for a better work-life balance, or who want more control over their careers.

On the other hand, it can also be unstable and insecure. Workers may not have the same job security as traditional workers and may have to deal with spells of unemployment. In addition, self-employed workers may have to pay their own expenses, such as insurance and benefits, which can reduce their income.

Overall, the gig economy is a complex trend with some advantages and disadvantages. It is important that workers considering gig work are aware of the risks and rewards before making a decision.

The article also gives some tips for succeeding in the gig economy:

  • Develop specialized skills that are in demand by clients.
  • Create a portfolio of your work that showcases your skills and experience.
  • Use online platforms to connect with potential customers.
  • Be professional and trustworthy in your relationships with clients.
  • Manage your time and finances effectively.
  • Be flexible and adaptable to changes in the market.

In my personal case, the gig economy could be a good option as I could use my skills and experience to work on a variety of projects, both inside and outside the real estate sector. As an architect I could also have more flexibility and control over my work, allowing me to balance my work life with my family life.

However, according to the article, I also need to be aware of the challenges of the gig economy. I must make sure I have a plan in place to ensure my job security, benefits and stability, I must be prepared to work hard and be competitive in the gig economy.
